Deputy Public Defender II and IV, Kona Office

Entry level attorney position (DPD II) & experienced felony trial attorney (DPD IV) positions available

Job description: We are seeking dedicated deputy public defenders to join our office. Deputy public defenders represent clients who are unable to afford legal representation in criminal legal proceedings in the Hawai’i family, district, circuit courts.

Duties:
– Provide legal representation to clients in court proceedings
– Conduct legal research and analysis to build a strong defense case
– Negotiate with prosecutors for plea bargains when necessary
– Draft legal documents such as motions, briefs, and appeals
– Advocate for clients’ rights and interests throughout the legal process
– Collaborate with other legal professionals, including judges, prosecutors, and social workers

Requirements:
– Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
– Licensed to practice law in the State of Hawai’i
– Experience in legal research using tools like Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills
– Ability to work under pressure and manage a high caseload effectively

Preferred skills:
– Familiarity with criminal law and criminal procedure
– Litigation experience

Salary (annual):       Public Defender II: $83,856             PD IV: $115,080

Entry level attorney position

Job description: providing legal services for indigent clients primarily in district and family court cases and initial appearances in felony cases, safeguarding individual rights in criminal and related matters, from arrest or threat of confinement through all states of criminal proceedings including specialty courts and parole board matters.

Qualifications: Law school graduation, passing the Hawaii Bar exam and MPRE

Salary: $80,628/yr plus State of Hawaii benefits
